Our Favorite Things to Do in McKinney
Let’s face it, not everyone enjoys doing the same things. Some people like to get active and enjoy the outdoors, while others would rather spend the day at a museum learning about local history. Luckily, our town has plenty to offer for any preference! Here are some of our top recommendations:
Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary
Preserving nature and exploring the science of our world is important for all of us. That’s why McKinney resident Bessie Heard turner her efforts toward opening the Heard Natural History Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary all the way back in 1967. Her goal was to educate children and future generations about nature by preserving and dedicating a 289-acre area for this purpose.
This sanctuary aims to educate, conserve, and preserve, but it’s also entertaining for young and old alike. Here you’ll find exhibits on venomous snakes, marine life, fossils, rocks and minerals, and even full-scale re-creations of dinosaurs! Be sure you also spend time exploring the many collections and beautiful gardens as well. This is one trip you’ll be glad that you made!
Historic Downtown McKinney
Plenty of towns all across the country claim to have “historic” downtown areas, but none can live up to McKinney’s. Our city has the oldest active historic downtown area in all of Texas! And when we say “active”, we’re talking about more than 120 shops as well as two dozen mouth-watering restaurants. It’s the perfect place to spend the day browsing for furniture, antiques, art, clothing, and more.
Visiting the Historic Downtown is also one of the best activities in McKinney because of the nightlife. This is a popular spot for live entertainment like concerts and other performances that the whole community can enjoy. Don’t miss out on all the Downtown McKinney has to offer!
Towne Lake Recreation Area
There’s no way that we could make this list without including one of our favorite destinations, the Towne Lake Recreation Area. And what an area it is! This wonderful location has more than 100 dedicated to any type of outdoor activity you can imagine. Whether you’re in the mood for some relaxing pond fishing or a fun family picnic, this is where you want to be on a beautiful day.
And if you feel like getting a little exercise, take advantage of the recreation area’s sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, or the 18-hole disc golf course. There’s even a 1.2 mile lighted hiking and bicycle trail you can use day or night! When the weather is right, pay a visit to this wonderful local gem.
Mitas Hill Vineyard
We love activities with the whole family, but sometimes you deserve to spend some quality time with just the grown-ups. That’s where McKinney’s own Mitas Hill Vineyard comes in! North Texas has become well-known for its vineyards and the delicious wines they produce, and this particular spot might be the region’s best.
The vines are grown on a sun-covered hill that’s not only perfect for gapes, but also for spending a romantic day or relaxation and wine tasting. Some of the most popular wines they produce include Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, and Syrah. No matter your preference though, you’re sure to have a day to remember when you visit the Mitas Hill Vineyard.
